About Sensei Thomas Jeleniewicz
I have been studying Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu for over 14 years at the Bushidokan Martial Arts Temple in Sparks, Nevada. Learning Jujitsu was a major influence on my life growing up. Going to the dojo and learning something physical allowed me to develop a better understanding of how my body moves and how to work with other people. This taught me discipline, how to creatively work in pairs and teamwork since we focused on developing each other’s skills. This included teaching newer students as I started moving up the ranks. This nurtured the joy I get out of teaching which led me to becoming a public school teacher after the pandemic. After two years of teaching in a public school and a relocation to Metro Atlanta, I decided to pursue my passion of teaching Jujitsu.
About Dan Zan Ryu:
Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu is a Japanese style that was created by Professor Henry S. Okazaki in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dan Zan Ryu is a fusion of Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu and Kodokan Judo along with other martial arts including elements of Shorin Ryu Karate, Wrestling and Hawaiian Lua. This means Dan Zan Ryu is very similar to Judo with some of the older elements of traditional styles of Jujitsu such as self defense techniques that evolved from the Samurai era. The curriculum includes joint locks, throws, ground work, and combined techniques. This makes Dan Zan Ryu a blended martial art that focuses on self improvement through the study of Jujitsu in a supportive environment.
